Expert knowledge in terms of environmental protection

At DB Schenker, environmental protection starts with ist own environmental targets, to actively support its customers in achieving environmental targets.

DB Schenker Rail set up its environmental department more than ten years ago, and it has played a significant part in establishing, developing, and pursuing environmental principles, as well as the constant monitoring of environmental activities. DB Schenker Rail Germany has been ISO 14001-certified since 2002.

Environmental management at DB Schenker Logistics is part of the risk management activities of the HSE (Health, Safety, Environment) department. It is carried out locally by environmental managers in the national organizations. At DB Schenker Logistics, 48 countries worldwide are certified according to ISO 14001 and a global environmental management system was approved in February 2011. The intention
is that DB Schenker Logistics will be ISO 14001-certified everywhere by 2012.

In recent years, DB Schenker has already significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The DB Schenker Rail and DB Schenker Logistics business units have so far achieved the following:

Optimization of transport (for example, reducing deadhead trips and optimizing utilization): Rail 50 percent (since 1998) and Logistics 5 percent (since 2007)

Using alternative carrier types: Up to 5 percent at DB Schenker Logistics alone

Using alternative engine types: 1 percent

Optimizing stationary processes such as energy recovery and energy-efficient power units for conveyor and storage systems: 10 percent

Using environmentally friendly packaging and reducing packaging: 20 percent

Avoiding waste: 10 percent

Since 1994, the environmental strategy of Deutsche Bahn has been developed and managed by the DB Environment Center which supports DB Schenker through counseling and services. For example, Eco TransIT World, the online service that calculates emissions from rail, road, ship, and aircraft transport in any combination, was also developed here.
