skip: Acquisition of PCC Logistics finalized
Deutsche Bahn has concluded its complete acquisition of PCC Logistics effective July 21th. The contract defining purchase terms for the largest privately owned freight railway in Poland had been already signed at the end of January in Warsaw.

With about 5,800 employees and revenues of EUR 350 million (2008), PCC Logistics is the largest private railroad company in Poland. PCC Logistics consists of several companies which operate regionally and are primarily specialized in transporting coal, chemicals and construction material and sidings services. The company’s transport volume in 2008 was about 93 million tons.

Dr. Karl-Friedrich Rausch, member of the DB Mobility Logistics AG Management Board responsible for the Transportation and Logistics Division, notes, “PCC Logistics has now become an integral part of our future-oriented logistics activities on Europe’s rails. Working together, we will now further develop offers and services for our customers and expand our position as the leading European freight railway.”

Initial market success since acquisition: introduction of joint transports

PCC Logistics is slated to become the central pillar for Eastern Europe within DB’s European network. The first joint transports are already operating between Poland and Germany, as well as between Poland and Romania. Preparations are in full swing to launch a new cross-border block train concept, as well as additional rail-bound logistics solutions as of the 2009/10 train schedule change.

Poland is the second-largest national rail market within the European Union and plays an important role in developing traffic along the trans-European rail corridors, especially the East-West corridor. Moreover, the country has great potential to further expand rail-bound logistics offers for Polish and international customers.

For DB Schenker the acquisition marks an increase in service and performance for customers in Europe. Together, the internationally operating freight railways, DB Schenker Rail and PCC Logistics, will shift more traffic on to the rails.

Cooperation with freight railroad PKP

Talks are underway with the state-owned Polish freight railroad PKP to continue the cooperation with emphasis on single-wagon and intermodal transports.DB Schenker Logistics was already successfully established in Poland with its subsidiary company Schenker Sp. z o.o., and about 1,600 employees. It is also one of the biggest and best performing freight forwarders in the country. Among the firm’s customers are renowned Polish and international corporations such as ABB, Ikea, Shell and Würth.
