22 May 2019 Focus on sustainability at DB Schenker Being a sustainability champion is one of DB Schenker’s strategic objectives. The globally operating logistics service provider has committed to an ambitious CO₂ reduction of 20% by 2025. Based on this ambition, the company will invest in a modern, clean fleet in the coming years. In addition, DB Schenker reduces the emissions of its buildings with energy-saving measures and the use of green energy. In May 7,120 solar panels were taken into use at the Schenker Venlo Tradepark North logistics center in the Netherlands. The solar panels cover an area of more than 3.5 soccer fields with an expected yield of 1,755 MWh, the annual electricity consumption of around 500 families. About a quarter of the energy is used by the Schenker site, the overproduction is returned to the energy network. Solar panels are already installed at the Schenker locations Zwevegem and Eupen (Belgium). Studies are currently taking place for installing solar panels at more locations in the Benelux. “Making our existing business premises more sustainable is at the forefront of our corporate policy. We are constantly investigating new opportunities in and around our locations to reduce our ecological footprint,” says Emile Goossens, CFO at Schenker Logistics Benelux. “Therefore we also switch to LED lighting. A number of locations in the Benelux have already made this switch in the last three years, resulting in a drastic reduction of almost 40% in annual energy consumption. A smart light management system controls and adjusts the lighting remotely to the desired work situation, e.g. by motion sensors, light dimming and time switching.” DB SchenkerDB Schenker is a leading service provider in global logistics and has over 76,000 employees in more than 130 countries.
