DB Schenker in its 150th Anniversary Year: Leading the Way to a More Sustainable World

DB Schenker, one of the world's leading logistics providers, recently celebrated its 150th anniversary under the theme "150 Years Elevating Lives". Building on its three pillars of innovation, sustainability and people, the company will continue to forge ahead to drive long-term growth for itself, its customers, and partners.

Since its founding in Vienna in 1872, DB Schenker has been committed to providing its customers with comprehensive logistics and transportation services, which includes supporting them with innovative technologies and solutions to meet the ever-evolving needs of their respective sectors. Looking ahead, DB Schenker will continue to shape the future of logistics through innovative, digital and sustainable solutions.

    Driven by Innovation

For 150 years, innovation has always been an integral part of DB Schenker's corporate culture. From developing best-in-class products and services to delivering cutting-edge technologies, DB Schenker continues to empower its customers with industry-leading solutions that enable them to elevate their businesses and compete effectively and efficiently in today's global economy.

Officially launched in April 2022, the Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMC) —Asia’s first multi-industry advanced manufacturing facility integrated with automated and smart logistics solutions— was developed by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) with the support from DB Schenker. The AMC is an integrated logistics and manufacturing facility with "smart manufacturing" at its core, powered by DB Schenker's automated logistics systems to help tenants from various industries enhance their sourcing, production and distribution activities. DB Schenker's agile, collaborative supply chain management solutions enable the integration of the facility's manufacturing and logistics and provide a significant boost to the re-industrialization of Hong Kong and the region by offering a complete spectrum of solutions to enable seamless operations from manufacturing to end-to-end finished goods fulfilment.

In addition, DB Schenker's automated warehouse in Pinghu, Jiaxing, is nearing completion. The automated storage and retrieval system, also known as ASRS which incorporates double-deep racking, stacker cranes and conveyor lines will replace manual putaway and picking which operated by labor and reach trucks, to achieve unmanned operation in the warehouse area. As DB Schenker's first wholly-owned warehouse park in Greater China, the Pinghu warehouse will encompass a total area of 54,000 square meters, including a 3,600 square meter automated warehouse with a height of 21 meters, capable of storing 8,100 pallets at a space utilization rate unachievable in conventional warehouses. The warehouse —expected to be operational by the end of August 2022— will be another milestone for DB Schenker's smart logistics operations in Greater China.

    Sustainable Development

As a global leader in logistics services, DB Schenker has a long-standing commitment to the long-term sustainability of transportation and strives to develop specialized solutions for each mode of transportation. As a result, customers are now able to optimize their environmental footprint by reducing or compensating for their CO2 emissions through the transportation.

By utilizing innovative and sustainable fuels, DB Schenker demonstrates the possibility of net-zero CO2 emissions in both air and ocean freight and launches corresponding carbon neutral solutions. In April this year, DB Schenker Greater China signed a contract with its partner, Foton Motor Group, for the procurement of 38 electric trucks which will be put into service in 14 cities across China by the end of August. Compared with regular fuel vehicles, the new energy trucks will greatly cut CO2 emissions during logistics and transportation, with one truck reducing 14 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

Bolstered by an upgraded fleet that has shifted to greener alternatives to improve sustainability, DB Schenker is well-positioned to make even greater contributions to the decarbonization of the transportation industry in Greater China.

    People First

For 150 years, DB Schenker has been upholding the brand spirit of "putting people first" by creating a fair, comfortable and attractive work environment for its employees. DB Schenker Greater China was recently awarded the Great Place to Work® Certification™ —an honor based on employees' anonymous answers in the Trust Index® survey— demonstrating employees’ approval of the company's workplace culture.

Employees are DB Schenker's most valuable assets. DB Schenker facilitates personalized career development by providing targeted training and learning resources for all employees. Meanwhile, in this era of globalization, DB Schenker is committed to embracing cultural diversity and creating an inclusive environment for people from all backgrounds. This is in line with DB Schenker's commitment to fostering the career longevity of its employees and its belief in a robust corporate culture.

Vishal Sharma, CEO, Greater China Cluster, DB Schenker: "Ever since its inception in 1872, DB Schenker has always been dedicated to advancing businesses and lives by shaping the way our world connects. In our 150th anniversary year, we are taking this pioneering spirit to new heights by driving innovation, shaping a sustainable future and building thriving, connected people-oriented communities."
