DB Schenker, one of the global leading integrated logistics services providers, recently held the Greater China 2023 Regional Land Transportation Partnership Conference, with participation by 19 land transportation carriers across the region. The focus of the conference was the sharing of DB Schenker’s strategy for the coming years while acknowledging the great work from outstanding carriers over prior year of 2022. With sustainability as one of the key pillars for growth, DB Schenker encouraged all carriers to continue their low-carbon, sustainable initiatives, and for every individual to become participants, contributors, and leaders, joining together in the construction of a green logistics network.

Covering the period of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021 – 2025), the General Office of the State Council has issued planning aimed at further developing modern logistics. With the goal of enhancing the sustainable development of logistics capabilities, the plan emphasizes the incorporation of green and environmental protection concepts throughout the entire modern logistics chain. As a pillar industry supporting the development of the national economy, the logistics sector has been entrusted with the missions of energy conservation and emissions reduction. This requires logistics and logistics-related companies to take the initiative to be responsible for more than just their own operations, and also serve as ambassadors to bring together all resources and strengths along the entire supply chain to jointly create a sustainable green logistics ecosystem.

Realizing the “dual-carbon goal” of peak carbon emissions by 2030, and carbon neutrality by 2060, is key to achieving high-quality economic development and improving the ecological environment. At this critical juncture for building a green logistics ecosystem, DB Schenker is collaborating with carriers throughout Greater China to promote the concept of joint development and co-construction of transportation capacity. This includes creating new products and engines for initiating a new future. Along with its carrier partners, DB Schenker will jointly launch three major initiatives within this year. These initiatives comprise building a city partner model, working with domestic carriers to create 18 domestic less-than-truckload lines, and to increase 50 high-quality less-than-truckload lines covering major core cities in China over the next three years. DB Schenker will increase investment in new energy vehicles (NEVs). Building on an existing base of 45 NEVs which are currently running in 15 cities in China, more than 80 NEVs will be launched within this year for the construction of a green urban distribution network. This is part of efforts over the next three years to achieve the goal of having NEVs make up 75% of urban distribution by 2025. At the same time, DB Schenker is improving green transportation solutions with the ongoing construction of self-operated green channels. Although the limited transport distance supported by currently available lithium battery NEVs is a major technical barrier, DB Schenker continuously strives to improve green transport solutions based on existing technologies. Efforts to increase the coverage of cities have been underpinned by door-to-door green transport solutions launched in 2022, linking neighboring cities within 200 km. DB Schenker has completed the construction of a round-trip Beijing-Tianjin line with daily operations by two 13.5m-long NEV heavy trucks. And DB Schenker's hydrogen trucks transportation solution has been tested and deployed within the round-trip line from Shanghai to Suzhou.

Striving to provide professional improvement plans for each transportation mode, DB Schenker, as one of the industry’s low-carbon pioneers, has always been committed to achieving long-term sustainable development in the transportation field. While focusing on its own development goals, DB Schenker continues to work with carriers to promote the construction of green logistics ecosystems and contribute to the sustainable development of the logistics industry.

Robert Wu, Head of Land Transport, DB Schenker in Greater China said: " More participants are needed to successfully achieve a green logistics ecosystem. Therefore, we adhere to principles of green development and encourage our carriers to join with us on this common goal. This enables us to jointly create a green logistics supply chain and promote the rapid development of China's green logistics ecology. Currently, we are applying for ISO14064-2 Sustainable Green Freight Project certification, which will in the future provide more transparent carbon emission analytics data for our carriers, partners, and customers and help them achieve quantifiable and visible Scope 3 emissions reductions."

Vishal Sharma, CEO of DB Schenker in Greater China, said: “Environmental protection and economic growth are two fundamental principles for achieving sustainable development. DB Schenker recognizes the important role of green logistics in reducing carbon emissions, and we believe that the transition to renewable energy is a critical engine for sustainable development. DB Schenker will continue to deepen its presence in China to provide diversified solutions with stronger logistics and transportation network capabilities, becoming a practitioner of sustainable development. As a company with 150 years of history, DB Schenker is aware that sustainable development is an essential key to ensuring growth for the next 150 years.”
