I was previously working at Airbus in Hamburg, Germany before I decided to join Schenker. Big bureaucratic hurdles coupled with major restructuring efforts and lack of clear management direction had left me feeling stagnant in my role. Through some trainees in DB Schenker and DB Cargo, I discovered the trainee program Talents@DB Schenker. Positive feedback compelled me to apply to the trainee program, and I joined DB Schenker as a Talents@DB Schenker trainee program back in April 2015.
I started working in the Contract Logistics Business Unit in the department called Continuous Improvement. Around this time, the department was conceptualizing a “Production System” that would affect around 500 + Contract Logistics sites globally. This production system, called XSITE, aims at excellence in operations in terms of standardization, continuous improvement and people development. This topic piqued my interest quite a lot.
What should have been a six-month station, led to nine-months, and because I had found my “niche”, I decided, along with tremendous support from my boss, the CL leadership team and HR, to join the team full-time.
In January, we started piloting our concept around the globe. I had the opportunity to implement XSITE in Houston, USA. After the sojourn in the US, I had an opportunity to implement XSITE in the Netherlands, plan an implementation in the UK and soon will be off to the US again for another implementation. Needless to say, such experiences provide you with remarkable opportunities to grow, or as our board member Tom Schmitt puts it – enhance your professional franchise. Furthermore, working on such an initiative allowed me to collaborate with a lot of interesting and extremely intelligent people from all over the globe, many of whom I am proud to call them friends.
I have also benefited tremendously, as I have been given significant opportunities to develop myself via other avenues. One highlight was a Six Sigma Black Belt training offered by the Deutsche Bahn which lasts for four weeks and allows you to gain a host of expertise in Lean, Six Sigma, Change Management etc.
So far, I have tremendously enjoyed working at DB Schenker. I love how international this company is, how great the people are and how much room the company provides for collaboration and experience exchange. At Schenker I have been pushed, tried and tested, given freedom to create meaning and tackle interesting problems, met colleagues who have mentored me, moulded me and allowed me to explore territories I never dreamed of chartering. Schenker, in its own way, has breathed essence into my existence.
