From the Snow into the Desert
When it comes to oversize cargo movements, tight deadlines, and remote destinations can pose challenges that require detailed coordination, preparation, and organization.
With more than two months of meticulous planning and calling upon 44 years of combined expertise, DB Schenker in Saudi Arabia successfully transported an oversize cargo from Finland to Jeddah, comprising of filters for one of the largest metal mining subsidiaries, which weighed over 260 tons. An equivalent of forty African elephants!
Where Action Breathed Success
Due to the complex nature of the cargo, various options had to be explored to determine an appropriate operations strategy. A below-deck RO/RO (Roll-on/Roll-off) option was finalized, which involved transporting three filters. Before the shipment arrival, DB Schenker teams in Finland and Saudi Arabia obtained all the necessary permits to avoid any hiccups. Post shipment arrival in Saudi Arabia, the team there actioned on a route survey to determine the most economical and safe itinerary. Based on the local authorities' route approval and time restrictions of oversized cargo movements, a 900 km route was selected to move the filters to their final destination, Jeddah, via land. Additionally, multi-axle hydraulic trailers were provided to further complete the transit as per the agreed time frame with the customer.
A Remarkable Feat of Team-Work
While the consignment crossed land and sea, the DB Schenker teams in Saudi Arabia, Finland, and Belgium worked hand-in-hand to ensure the success of the shipments. Yet again, DB Schenker in Saudi Arabia demonstrated its ability to run smooth operations of special shipments, conduct strategic planning, and coordinate with relevant authorities, no matter the obstacles and complexity.
