DB Schenker Officially Joins Cathay Cargo Corporate SAF Programme, Advancing Towards a Sustainable Aviation Future
Recently, DB Schenker and Cathay Cargo jointly held a signing ceremony at the airline’s Cathay City headquarters to commemorate DB Schenker's membership of the Cathay Corporate Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Programme, aiming to accelerate the aviation industry’s transition towards environmental sustainability and carbon-reduction emissions.
Attended by DB Schenker Vice President Global Carrier Relation Susanne Silvia Stemmer and Cathay Director Cargo Tom Owen, the ceremony marked a momentous step taken by DB Schenker following its emission reduction commitment in July, becoming the biggest contributor to Cathay Corporate SAF Programme. This collaboration represents not only a pivotal milestone for both parties to foster the development and implementation of the SAF industry chain, but also a robust demonstration of their dedication to propelling the aviation industry to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
DB Schenker Vice President Global Carrier Relation Susanne Stemmer said: “We are very excited about this collaboration with Cathay Cargo, which will contribute to a more sustainable future for our industry and enhance our long-lasting global partnership with Cathay.”
Cathay Director Cargo Tom Owen said: “We are delighted to welcome DB Schenker here not only as the newest member of the Cathay Corporate SAF Programme, but also as its biggest contributor. It is great to have this level of support from such an important player in the air cargo industry as we work together to decarbonize aviation. This ceremony marks our appreciation for DB Schenker’s significant contributions to our collective efforts to fly Greener Together.”
DB Schenker Global Air Freight Sustainability Manager Alexander Mentgen said: “SAF is making change possible already today. Our new SAF alliance with Cathay Cargo enhances our sustainability commitment and leadership in the skies.”
As one of the world's leading logistics providers, DB Schenker first adopted SAF for a proportion of its transport volumes in 2020 as part of its carbon-reduction programme. In July 2024, DB Schenker announced its participation in Cathay Corporate SAF Programme, and committed to buy 878 metric tons of SAF (equivalent to 290,000 US gallons), which is expected to cut over 2,600 metric tons of carbon emissions. SAF,which can reduce more than 80% of greenhouse gas emissions on a life-cycle basis compared to conventional jet fuel, is a crucial tool for the aviation industry to minimize carbon footprints and achieve environmental objectives.
In line with the global trend of energy transformation and emission reduction, DB Schenker anticipates collaborating with Cathay Cargo to promote the widespread use of SAF, paving the way for the sustainable growth of the aviation logistics sector. Moving forward, DB Schenker will continue to pioneer innovative and efficient sustainable solutions, leading the industry towards a greener, low-carbon future.
