European Union extends Emissions Trading System (ETS) to include shipping industry and ferry operators
The European Parliament has decided that shipping companies should be included in the Emissions Trading System (ETS) from 2024.
The initiative to include the transport sector in the ETS is part of the EU Green Deal and the 'Fit for 55' program, which aims to tackle climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 (compared to 1990 levels).
The aim of the plan is to make companies that emit greenhouse gases take responsibility for their emissions and pay for them.
Timetable for the plan
Shipping companies must submit allowances corresponding to a proportion of their emissions according to the following timetable:
In 2024, companies must submit allowances for 40% of their verified emissions.
In 2025, companies must submit allowances for 70% of their verified emissions.
From 2026 onwards, companies must submit allowances for all their verified emissions.
Costs associated with the ETS will be passed on to those who use shipping companies/ferry routes.
