    Innovation and AI

The use of AI opens up new opportunities, and DB Schenker is collaborating with key players in several projects.

    iBoxen
DB Schenker, iBoxen and the University of Linköping have started a comprehensive feasibility study to develop an AI tool that can improve the location of delivery boxes in Swedish cities. This project is part of CLOSER’s AI Enhanced Mobility project, which is funded by Vinnova and Drive Sweden. It is built on a previous study showing that an AI-based solution can optimize the location of delivery boxes based on the locations of parcel agents and community movement. The project now moves into a more detailed study that will investigate how AI can be used to optimize the location of delivery boxes and parcel agents depending on the existing agent locations and community movement.

    TRASSEL
In the project TRASSEL, DB Schenker works together with Viscando, a startup company that specializes in sensor technology, data and AI for traffic and mobility. The project aims to improve efficiency in our logistics terminals by solving problems such as long processing times, delays and congestion.
By using 3D sensing technology, data visualization, and AI, the project focused on providing insights, forecasts and visualizations of how goods move and are placed within terminals. The objective is to get the valuable insights provided by visualizations and highlight the ability of modern AI to predict goods movement and space utilization. The study suggested that proactive decision-making based on AI predictions could greatly improve terminal operations, leading to increased productivity.

    REDIG
Together with Gothenburg Green City Zone, DB Schenker Sweden is involved in the project REDIG, aiming to create a fossil-free logistics system for the city’s event area. The project runs from October 2023 to October 2026 and the main goal is to reduce delivery traffic and costs by consolidating goods in a sustainable way, highlighting the need for operational changes to meet climate goals and optimize traffic flow. The project’s purpose is to establish a shared hub for goods, enabling stakeholders to achieve both environmental and economic benefits. The collaboration will lower fossil fuel consumption, ease congestion, noise, accidents and environmental impacts.

    REEL 2
REEL is a national initiative with the aim of accelerating the transition to electrified heavy transport together with leading Swedish stakeholders. The project, which is closely linked to eCharge, is managed by CLOSER at Lindholmen Science Park. The initiative involves establishing, running, and evaluating around 60 different regional logistics flows and brings together numerous different stakeholders such as transport buyers, freight forwarders, hauliers, terminal operators, charging point operators, electricity grid companies and suppliers of management systems, charging equipment and vehicles. The aim of the project is to create an experimental and theoretical base that can be used to accelerate large-scale regional electrification. Godstransportservice (GTS) in Umeå, one of DB Schenker’s partner hauliers, is an active participant in REEL and is also the haulier operating the initiative’s first fully electric distribution truck in northern Sweden.
