Measuring emissions
Measuring emissions can unfortunately be very tricky. We all want to know how much emission our operation generates, but counting emissions is difficult and complex. At the same time, the new CSRD legislation from the EU also requires us to measure and report our climate impact. So, what is the best approach?
Important to know about emission calculations
It is important to understand that emission calculations are very complex. They are based on data that can be defined, delimited and measured in different ways. The results from different emission reports are based on differing assumptions, why it is not possible to compare them with one another. The existing standards regulate how to measure and report emissions of greenhouse gases, but the standard does not regulate the quality of data to be used.
Global standards
DB Schenker’s emissions reports follow the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG) standard developed by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). Our calculations are also based on the most widely used and accepted standards, namely GLEC, ISO 14064, EN 16258. We are also adapting our tool to the ISO 14083 and the EU regulation CountEmissionsEU.
Our approach to emission calculations
The DB Schenker approach to emission calculation is to follow the global standards for emission calculation and work closely together with EcoTransIT, a global third-party organization which specialises on emission calculations, to improve our tool. The better data we have, the better the tool and we are therefore putting a lot of efforts into improving data collection and transparency.
We offer our customers two tools to analyse their carbon footprint: » EcoTransIT, which is used to assess future transport, and » Emission reports in Connect, which presents the approximate carbon footprint of our completed transport runs.
Advanced emissions reports
Our consultancy company » DB Schenker Consulting AB helps our customers with advanced emissions reports. DB Schenker Consulting’s report is more detailed and more customer specific than the standard report that DB Schenker offers via Connect. The level of detail in DB Schenker Consulting’s emissions report, regarding fuel and vehicle type, for example, is determined in consultation with the customer. DB Schenker Consulting produces a comprehensive analysis, and the results can be presented in various ways depending on the customer’s requirements and purpose. The emissions report also includes an action plan with concrete measures that can help to reduce climate impact, such as change of fuel, greater consolidation, or alternative means of transport.
