Potential ILA strike on U.S. East Coast ports

We would like to inform you of a potential labor strike impacting U.S. East Coast ports on January 15. While there have been recent developments in negotiations between the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) and the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), no resolution has been reached. The primary concern centers around automation, though additional factors are contributing to the situation.

To mitigate any disruptions this may cause, we recommend considering the following contingency plans:

    1. Rerouting Shipments
      • Redirect cargo to alternative ports on the U.S. West Coast, such as Los Angeles, Long Beach, or Seattle. Please note that these ports may experience increased congestion due to higher traffic volumes.
    2. Alternative Modes of Transportation
      • For time-sensitive or high-value shipments, consider utilizing air freight services. While more costly, air freight can bypass port delays and ensure faster delivery.
    3. Intermodal Solutions
      • Leverage intermodal transport options, including rail and truck combinations, to move cargo inland from alternative ports and avoid potential congestion.
    4. Monitoring Terminal Operations
      • Stay informed on updates regarding terminal operations. Some ports may extend operating hours to manage increased traffic.
    5. Maintain Communication Flow
      • Ensure consistent communication with all stakeholders regarding potential delays, contingency plans, and any schedule changes. Transparency will help manage expectations and maintain smooth operations.
