What does electrification mean for us?
DB Schenker’s long-term global goal is for all transport to be powered by renewable electricity and for land transport, battery-electric vehicles will play a particularly important role for a long period of time. However, the transition to emission-free technology will not just affect our vehicles, but many of our processes. Certainly, the key focus is the vehicles and their capacity, but we need to re-evaluate and develop many different elements of our operation.
Charging infrastructure
We need to ensure that the charging infrastructure we put in place enables us to charge vehicles in the right place, at the right time. We also need to consider effects on transport efficiency, effects on the vehicle, the work environment and driving and rest times for drivers.
Design of terminals
We need to evaluate the design of our terminals and adapt it to ensure optimal charging infrastructure.
Electricity supply
We need to continue to ensure a cost-effective supply of renewable electricity. We also want to produce more of our own renewable electricity and to map the need for storing electricity at our facilities.
Power
We need to ensure that we have enough power in the electric grid to cover our energy needs. The green transition increases the demand for electricity which fuels the need for cutting power peaks in the electric grid. This can affect our business resilience and therefore needs to be taken into consideration.
Transport efficiency
We want to use as little energy as possible and maintain our level of transport efficiency when we conduct our assignments. With that in mind, we must ensure that electrification does not result in suboptimization of the transport system, i.e. we do not want to use two vehicles instead of one.
Quality
We aim to safeguard our high-quality standards and must ensure that we, as we transition, can maintain and further improve our delivery accuracy, so that customers can continue to rely on our transport services.
Business agreements
We develop business agreements with our partners based on the new prerequisites.
Products and offers
We develop new products and offers that can be adapted to an ever-changing market.
Risk mitigation
We investigate new risks linked to electrification, such as fires, and develop relevant plans to deal with these.
