European Emission Trading System and the Fuel EU Maritime regulations from 01/01/2025

Following the implementation of the European Emission Trading System (EU ETS) in 2024, the EU ETS surcharge was implemented.

Starting in 2025, the EU ETS regulation will evolve to account for 70% of emissions, compared to the current 40% in 2024. This substantial increase in the percentage of emissions covered by the EU ETS will have a direct impact on the fee carriers will apply.

In addition, a new regulation “Fuel EU Maritime” will be introduced, requiring all the carriers to decrease the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission intensity of the energy used by vessels in the EU over the full lifecycle of the fuels. To achieve this target carrier must use fuels with a lower emission footprint (e.g. biofuel) with all EU waters.

Due this the EU ETS fee will increase as follows starting from 01.01.25 until further notice
