Trump Orders Investigation of Copper Imports
Published in the February 28, 2025 Federal Register, Executive Order 14220 states the U.S. increasing dependence on foreign sources of copper from a concentrated number of supplier nations, along with the risk of foreign market manipulation, necessitates action under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act to determine whether imports of copper threaten to impair national security.
The Order directs the Secretary of Commerce to conduct an investigation of copper in all forms and report its findings to the President by November 2, 2025. Like Section 232 duties on steel and aluminum, the result of this investigation could include trade remedy duties on copper and derivative products.
Schenker will continue to monitor the status of this investigation and will communicate as more information becomes available.
