Now in its 21st year, the Humpty Dumpty Balmoral Burn charity fun run once again challenged participants to conquer Awaba Street’s 420 metre incline – Sydney’s steepest hill run. The event ran smoothly and successfully, and has now raised more than $1.25 million, which will go towards life-saving medical equipment for children’s hospitals across Australia.

But Awaba Street’s heart-pumping incline wasn’t the only challenge of the Burn. Planning an event of this size and scale in a suburban area required expert logistics and event planning to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

Humpty Dumpty Foundation CEO and MD, Claire Reaney, says she chose DB SCHENKER due to the company’s experience with event logistics and the team’s inherent knowledge of event organisation, supplier coordination, and safety practices.

“It’s the attention to detail, the knowledge, and the problem-solving attitude that sets DB SCHENKER apart,” says Reaney, adding that DB SCHENKER Head of Product, Fairs, Events, and Special Logistics, Sharyn Tamlyn, has been an asset to the success of the event.

“With Sharyn running the logistics and operations, I know I’m in capable hands. An event like the Humpty Dumpty Balmoral Burn has a major safety element, and Sharyn has all contingencies and scenarios well thought-out,” said Reaney.

For an event of this nature, the organisation and logistics consists of close to 10 marquee builds including a premier 15x55m marquee built on the sand of Balmoral Beach, creating a fully powered event site, council and local resident liaison and management, coordination of multiple suppliers, creating emergency and contingency plans, traffic management, set up and pack up, audio-visual equipment, and a range of other tasks. It takes months of planning to ensure the successful onsite delivery of events such as this.

Tamlyn says that good communication, and advanced planning is the key to the event’s success. “You never know what will happen on the day – there could be a king tide, or a storm – but with the resources of DB SCHENKER, we are able to provide plans for every scenario,” she said.

“We’re also able to use our resources and experience to communicate effectively with all suppliers and stakeholders, to ensure the smooth running of the operational side of the event.”

    DB SCHENKER feels the burn
In addition to the planning, organisation, and logistics, DB SCHENKER also entered a team into this year’s Burn – not only feeling the Burn by running up the hill but also fundraising to support Humpty’s continued good work to help sick kids in hospital.

“It was fantastic to see the DB SCHENKER team out there challenging themselves,” said Reaney. “There is often a greater purpose to this run. Overcoming the hill is an achievement in its own right, but there’s often a personal connection – perhaps a child, grandchild, friend, or relative who was saved by equipment this event has funded – and that’s truly special,” she said.

“With Sharyn and the DB SCHENKER team running the operations and anticipating problems before they arise – I feel secure that the event will be a success. I’m looking forward to welcoming the team back next year.”

    About Humpty Dumpty Foundation
For more than 30 years, the Humpty Dumpty Foundation and its supporters have provided life saving healthcare initiatives and medical equipment for sick children in around 500 hospitals and health services across Australia.

To date, Humpty has raised more than $90 million, provided thousands of pieces of medical equipment and funded many healthcare initiatives and services to Paediatric Wards, Neonatal Units, Maternity and Emergency Departments across the country.

Humpty’s impact dramatically increases positive health outcomes for sick children by ensuring hospitals have access to state of the art, easy to use and reliable equipment.  Not only are the equipment and healthcare initiatives child specific and appropriate for paediatric care, they also help reduce separation and anxiety between kids and their loved ones.
