DB Schenker sponsors its first mixed-gender team for 2021’s event.
Sailing is a sport where every decision counts. You need to be ready to make a split-second choice at any minute, and you have to keep your eye on the end goal at all times. On the surface, it may be an entirely different world to logistics, but to DB Schenker, there’s a focus and drive that’s common to both. It’s why the business is such a natural fit as a logistics provider to “Sailing Arabia – The Tour”, as well as the sponsor of the DB Schenker trimaran.
Now in its eleventh year, Sailing Arabia is one of the most prestigious races in the Middle East and sees elite sailors compete along 2,000 kilometers of Oman’s coastline. It’s also the only tour of its type in the world, with a mix of long offshore legs and intense in-port racing. The 2021 event starts on the 24th of November in Mussanah before moving on to Sur then Marina Bandar Al Rowdha and ending off in Muscat on the 5th of December. This year, the DB Schenker trimaran will be crewed by a mixed-gender team – a first for the competition, and the region. Describing the upcoming race, Ibtisam Al Salmi, one of the team members said, “It might be normal in a lot of countries, but for me it is a truly new experience. By being part of a diverse crew for the first time in Region MEA I feel like I am part of something unique.”
To remain fully focused on the races, the crews of Sailing Arabia – The Tour rely on professional logistics solutions. After facing an exhausting offshore race, the teams need to rest and recover, knowing their boats and gear are safely on their way to the next location. So, by bringing its logistics and cargo handling expertise to the equation, DB Schenker plays a crucial role in keeping the event (and the boats) moving smoothly.
Describing the process, Richard van Schie, Managing Director, DB Schenker in Oman (formally known as Schenker Khimji’s LLC), said, "Like previous years DB Schenker Khimji’s LLC is proud of the Oman Sail partnership. The last weeks have been challenging in regard to the global constraints in shipping, but our teams at origin have been amazing to get the equipment on board, on time."
In 2021 DB Schenker’s skipper, Nasser Al Mashari, will lead an enthusiastic group of professional Omani racing sailors. The crew not only aim to deliver a credible and competitive result in the race, they also want to set an example for how people of different backgrounds, nationalities and genders can come together in a high-performance environment. After all, the DB Schenker Spirit is about working as one team, with one goal, to push limits and achieve incredible things. When it comes to logistics, that results in an entirely seamless experience getting goods from A to B. On the water it’s very similar – with a crew staying completely in synch to get to the finish line, day after day of the event. “For us it is important that we are a united team. Without thinking about gender, in the end it’s all about sailing, challenging ourselves to go the extra mile,” says Al Mashari.
As a logistics partner, DB Schenker advances businesses and lives by shaping the way our world connects. For this event it requires careful and timely planning, 24/7 availability and bespoke solutions for each team and trade line – but that’s all just business as usual for DB Schenker. For the World Championship of the 49er Class, DB Schenker delivered more than 30 TEU’s from 14 different nations to Mussanah, whether directly from the games in Tokyo, the European Championships in Greece, or from the athletes’ home countries.
As Dennis Gallardo, Manager – Fairs & Events explains, "With the help of our global team of experts we help our clients get their equipment from event to event seamlessly. We are based in different countries and continents, but we speak the same language, and have 20-plus experience in event logistics to help keep things moving."
