Meet Rakhi Singh, Data Scientist from TSC India

Women in IT are truly changing the rules of the game! Especially if you talk about the profession in 'Data Science' it needs skills, deep insights, and perspectives. Meet Rakhi Singh who is acing this profession with all wits, and grace, leading it with passion. Read her full story and get inspired.

Rakhi, please share with us a bit about your career journey in IT… how did you start it?

I started my career as a Software Engineer in the banking domain after completing my Master’s in Computer Application. My job role was around data migration and database design which increased my orientation towards data and solving its complexities. To learn more in-depth, I quit my job and went to the UK for another master’s degree in machine learning from Bristol University. After finishing it around 2 years, I founded a start-up. After learning a lot of things about start-ups, I came back into corporate. Currently, I hold a diverse experience of 15 years in corporate… learning, unlearning IT!

...And about your role at DB Schenker Technology Solution Center, India?

I joined DB Schenker Technology Solution Center in May 2019. The requirement came from a data science project and there was no resource for the same in APAC. My first project was an analytics project in Ocean. Talking about my profile, I am a Data scientist and work on all types of datasets. My work involves understanding the business problem, gathering the requirement, then collecting & analysing respective data, applying various machine learning techniques and finally visualizing the results in PowerBI.

Perks of being in the IT profession?  How has been your experience so far?

Being in the IT profession, you are working in a relatively secure environment. There are colleagues who will always help you.  You get opportunities to work on on-site projects and talk to people of different cultures. Though sometimes the profession becomes quite demanding, the only way to keep it balanced with personal life is to prioritize the things. With current workplace practices at TSC, especially for the women in senior roles, it becomes a smooth process to excel on both sides of life.

For you ‘Professional Development’ means…?

For me, development means there should be something new to learn and implement. With my profession in data science, I work on new scenarios and techniques so many times… which is a great source for professional development, which I am passionate about.

I keep my learning curve growing through online learning platforms and by taking courses on the same. Last year I did a course on 'AI' from IIT Mandi. Apart from this, my day also involves spending some time reading about my area of interest i.e., data science for upscaling my knowledge.

...Things you like to take up during your leisure time?

Being an avid reader, I have a collection of more than 100 books on different topics. Currently, I am reading the ‘IKIGAI-The Japanese Secret for a Long and Happy Life’ ... surely gives a positive perspective on life. Apart from this, I love photography, driving and visiting places which are less travelled. I am also a certified Yoga and Reiki practitioner.

Any advice you want to share with young women talent aspiring to be a part of the IT profession?

Pursue things out of passion… don’t get disheartened by challenges. Challenges make you stronger and women can handle all of them. Keep yourself calm… and keep treading the path that you aspire for yourself!

Rakhi, thanks for sharing about your career journey.

We wish you a lot of success in your professional role with us. Good luck!
